A Fast Month!

Wow! I can't believe it is the last day of the month! Holy Cow! I have been sick since January 3rd! Crud. Today I spent most of the day walking! She was passing me and trotting along, staff was laughing that she was leaving me behind! My legs felt so weak  all I wanted to do was sit down! I got my square made today! Not much else!
I was stopped in the hall today and asked if I would come back to the dining room and eat. I really didn't want to but she said it is for socialization, but mom doesn't know she is socializing! She doesn't know what she is doing. I said I would come back starting today. I was out sick for 2 days and she said mom looked lost in the dining room without me. That was a huge stab in the heart. It ripped me apart! I can't even go there on how that made me feel! They started a new seating arrangement where there is assigned seating. I didn't like it but I'm always willing to give something a try. You never know it might work out for the best.
I had one problem with the assigned seating. They didn't save me a place at the table so I could sit and eat lunch with her. I had to sit behind her or try to scoot up beside her as far as I could get without disturbing the person sitting beside her. Where I was positioned I was in the way of wheelchairs and in the way of them handing out trays. I was so depressed after five days of it. Plus I had another problem with a resident that's not worth talking about.

Enough of that!!!

I going to experiment with making some small valentine baskets to hand out on the 14th! I want to make a lot of them. I will need to sit down and count how many people there are. I know its going to be a lot!

Here's my square for today!

I like that variegated yarn!

Visitors!

Today was a very busy day! My brother and sister in law showed up at lunch and stayed several hours! They live out of town so they don't get to come often since he works nights and she is a school principal.
Didn't get any crocheting done but that's ok! Just very grateful they stayed so long! They brought lunch too! When we were done my other brother who rarely shows up just pops in the room!
I didn't get any crocheting done except my square.

Finished Projects!

Mom was slow moving today. I managed to finish my pink hats! I also finished up a few other odd and ends things. Here is the first pink hat!

This was a free pattern from Ravelry! It's called
Sunday Evening Beanie. By Julie Barber
It is super easy! Quick to make!
I just couldn't get a good pic of this hat! I didn't have a baby doll
with the correct size head. It does look very cute in person!
This is the pattern called Bobble Tot Earflap Hat.

Here is my square for today.

Its ok.

Mom and her Chair!

Here is a pic of my beautiful mother. She has Alzheimers Disease. This is her pvc pipe chair she walks in everyday.
She sits down when she gets tired of walking.
I love her so much.
I am very thankful she is in a good nursing home with great cnas
taking care of her. They don't really know how much
I appreciate them. All 3 shifts!

Mom!

(Removed the part about mom)

On a crochet note I found mistakes in my pattern for the Toy Tote Bag. I have rewritten it. I only have the handles and drawstring to complete. Here is a pic.

Its 5 inches tall.

I wrote it down last night and posted it. I'm going to make another with better written instructions. I tried to make it today but I couldn't hold my head up! Ugh.
Here is my square.

*Notes:

******

Toy Tote Bag

Stuffed with Hot Wheels cars.

All I did was start it like this:

(I forgot to add I use worsted weight yarn!)
Size I hook

You start by making the base of the toy tote. The bigger the circle is the bigger your tote will be! I think I made mine a little too big. I think I made 7 increase rounds! Ugh!

You need to decide how big or small you want the tote to be. To make it big you increase 1 stitch on each round. Notice 3rd round you start with 2 hdc in sp, then 1 hdc in next sp. Repeat around, then 4th round 2 hdc in next sp then 2 hdc in next 2 sp. Repeat around. Continue with rounds increasing 1 st. I showed you how to increase up to round 5. The more increase rounds you do with make the tote larger.

To make it small you make the first 2 rounds and only make as many of the increasing rounds needed for the size you want.

Change colors where desired, or make it one color!

It is stuffed with a towel!

Toy Tote Bag

Ch 4, sl st in first ch made.

Round 1. Ch 1, hdc in ring 12 times. Sl st in top of 1st hdc made. (12 hdc)

Round 2. Sl st in next hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in same sp as ch 1. 2 hdc in each remaining 11 st. Sl st in top of 1st hdc made. (24 hdc)

Round 3. Sl st in next hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in same sp as ch 1, 1 hdc in next sp, (2 hdc in next sp, 1 hdc in next sp) 11 times. Sl st in top of 1st hdc made. (36 hdc)

Round 4. Sl st in next ch, ch 1, 2 hdc in same sp as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 2 sp, (2 hdc in next sp, 1 hdc in next 2 sp) 11 times. Sl st in top of 1st hdc made. (48 dc)

Round 5. Sl st in next ch, ch 1, 2 hdc in same sp as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 3 sp, (2 hdc in next sp, 1 hdc in next 3 sp) 11 times. Sl st in top of 1st hdc. (60 hdc)

Round 6. Sl st in next ch, ch 1, 1 hdc in same sp, 1 hdc in next 58 sp. Sl st in top of 1st hdc. (60 dc)

(If base begins to pucker or get a little wavy it will be fine once you start making the sides.)

Continue until toy tote is as tall as you want.

You will need to make 2 more rounds.

1st round. Ch 1, hdc in same sp as ch 1, hdc in next sp, (skip 2 sp, ch 2, 2 hdc in next 2 sp.) repeat around.

2nd round. Ch 1, hdc in same sp as ch 1, hdc in reamaining sp.

Drawstring:

Using 2 strands together make enough chains to go around the bag plus a few extra. Fasten off.

If making a smaller tote you may want to use a single strand to make drawstring.

Weave in and out of spaces on tote. Tie a knot then tie another knot on top of 1st knot so it will prevent it from pulling out of tote.

Handles

Decide how long or short you want your handles to be. Chain that amount. Hdc across. Fasten off. Sew on toy tote.

(You can make fatter handles or something else you like!)

I just sat down and wrote this out in 20 minutes. If you find any mistakes please let me know cause it was all in my head!!! :-D

Ugh!

I woke up this morning very, very, sick. I had to call nursing home and tell them I wasn't coming! I hate not going. I was supposed to go to a 3 year olds birthday party tonight! I was really looking forward to it. I hate to admit it but I don't have friends anymore. When I started taking care of my parents 7 years ago I didn't have time for them so I had to quit hanging out. Priorities come first, meaning my parents and my own immediate family. I just wanted to go and have some fun tonight! Talk to real adults! No sense in crying it won't change it. I have slept almost all day. No crochet today. Well I made my square for the day. Took me 4 hours stopping and starting. Ugh.

Here's my square for today.

I got sick!

I coughed all night and woke up weak and achy. The nurse sent me home at 1:30 pm. I hope I am better tomorrow! I finished my toy tote bag! Looks good! Very cute!

There's a bath towel crammed in there! Its big!

There are Hot Wheels cars in there now!

Before I left the nursing home today they found the man 2 doors down with something wrong. I don't know what it was but I could hear the ambulance coming and I heard someone say crash cart. I hope he is going to be ok. He really didn't look good when they wheeled him by.

He has a funny sense of humor. I would get in front of him and let him chase me in his wheelchair. He would always say, I will catch up with you! I enjoyed laughing with him. I hate nursing homes. You meet people and get to know them and the next day they are gone! Just like that! They go and die on you!You come back the next day and the bed is stripped and the belongings are packed or even worse they already have someone new in the bed! Then my stomach  gets in knots and I hold back the tears because they don't like it when I cry over someone dying. So I do silent grieving. Fake smile outside. Sadness ripping me apart inside.

Here is my square for the day.

Sleepy Saturday!

Mom not feeling well today. She slept almost the whole day!
I'm having trouble with mom's roommate. She is a very nice person but for the past few weeks she has been very angry! She is telling lies about every cna that takes care of her. Today she couldn't find her air freshener in her drawer and decided she was going to blame the cna who took care of her last night.
This cna is going to school full time during the day and working 3 to 11 shift. I have known her for almost a year. She is kind and gentle and trying very hard to make a better life for herself. She wants to be a lawyer. I got so upset that she would do this to someone who really needs her job and she does not steal! I know which cna's steal. You can't help but see everything when you are walking the halls most of the day.

I told her that if she told that lie to the nursing supervisor I was going to her and tell her you lied! She screamed, "NO!" I said I would do it. She wheeled herself out in the hall and I walked past her and went to the nurse and told her what she was going to do! The nurse is frustrated with her attitude. Mom's roommate got upset that I told the nurse what she was going to do! I couldn't let this cna take the fall for something she didn't do and something she would never do!

Sorry I needed to unload that!

I got my square made today!

That's red and yellow, it looks like orange!

I almost finished my shrek hat I need for a 3 year olds birthday party Monday night. Today I made a tote bag to carry his cars and trucks in when he goes somewhere! I just have to put the red handles on it!

I think it looks great!

If anybody reads this thanks for listening tonight!

Sick!

I woke up sick!!! YUK! I was sick 3 weeks ago with the crud, coughing hard and very weak and achy. Yes, I had my fricking flue shot! Its not protecting me from everything! In real life I don't whine so I shouldn't whine here! I left the nursing home at noon to go the two blocks to the grocery store, the entire section of meds for colds was EMPTY!!! I don't know why that surprised me! I did find 2 boxes of generic cold med and it said it was non drowsy but IT made me drowsy!

I kept mom on the hallway she lives on and we walked  at the end of the hall away from everybody! Then we stayed in her room a lot too. I didn't have a fever but I don't want to spread it! The last time I was sick the nurse sent me home for 2 days! Silently I was panicky because mom was alone all day and night! But the staff is very nice and they do a great job of taking care of her.

I only crocheted my square today. I just felt too bad to do anything!

Mom walked today!

Mom stayed in bed 2 hours this morning! I was able to finish my 3 camouflage hats! Here is a pic of them!

Look at the 3rd hat! I used a different skien of yarn for it and look how it turned out! Crazy!

We spent most of the day walking. She was sneezing her head off. I hope she doesn't get sick! It is going around the nursing home!

The hard part of being at the nursing home is you see and hear so much. I ignore everything. If I didn't I would go crazy! Mom and I were walking down the hallway towards her room when a verbal fight broke out! Someone taking my stuff and putting it on her side of the room thing! I couldn't escape with other people in the way so I left mom sitting there and I walked several feet away. I didn't want it to look like I was eavesdropping!

Just another day at the sad and lonely place.

I almost forgot to put up my square!

Here it is!

Mom in Bed all Day!

Mom wasn't up to par today. She stayed in bed all day. I got to crochet for 8 hours! I spent 5 hours working on my Valentine's Day Hat! It's time consuming!
Here's a picture of it!

Cute?

Here's today's square.
I'm really tired. I spent 11 hours at nursing home. I wanted to make sure she ate some of her dinner and I got some fluids in her!

Got to Crochet!

Mom didn't feel good today. She needed to rest a lot. I got in some crochet time. I would much rather have her up and walking! While I was working on my new Valentine's Day hat there was a knock on mom's door. It was one of the male residents, he asked me if I was married cause he was looking for a girlfriend. He wasn't looking for sex just someone to give him hugs and kisses. Plus help take care of him! Inside I was amused but didn't want to hurt his feelings so I told him I had been married forever! Which is true! 35 years! (I don't know how that happened!) He went away disappointed.
There's a bunch of "old dirty men" at the nursing home! Don't mean that in a bad way! Its just that some of them swoon when I turn the corner! I get two marriage proposals a month. It doesn't help that I speak to them every single time I pass them. Most of them don't have family, I am the only one they get to talk to besides other residents.

I also have many women friends too. They get sad easily. They wish I was their daughter. Some have no one to visit them. Some wish their daughters would just come see them. Its a sad place but I try to speak to everyone when I pass them or see them down the hallway.

So sorry I don't know how I got on that subject! On a crochet note I was able to make Christmas gifts for almost 50 people that live on Mom's hall! Next year I will have gifts for the entire nursing home!

I couldn't find my yarn needle! Its always on my desk! I guess I lost it last night!

Mom walking, walking!

What a busy day! I didn't get to crochet barely at all today! Mom was very energetic and we walked all over the building! We usually walk around the block so to speak the building is connected by four hallways so we go around and around! Today we walked through the dining room, the activity room, the foyer! She was so busy!

I did manage to get my square done!

A Slow Saturday!

Fast Thursday!

Today went by so fast!!! I finished a baby hat today! I needed a newborn hat for a CNA at the nursing home. Her daughter is pregnant and the shower is Saturday! I didn't want to make an ordinary newborn hat, so I made a "Newborn Happy Hat"!

Hope she likes it!

Today's square!

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Awesome Wednesday!

I got my square done today!

It's kinda ugly! (Laughing!)

This yarn was odd to begin with! I am trying to use the skein up so I don't have to look at it anymore!

I need to change the subject! Mom's doctor came by to see mom, is what I thought but instead he shook my hand and said this to me:

He said I was saintly. He said mom's walking and recovery is remarkable. My medicines did not make her well, you made her well. He said, you walk her, then you let her rest and recover, while you knit or crochet, you feed her good healthy food, you made your mom strong and healthy. Then he told mom she was blessed with a devoted daughter and was very lucky to have me.

I was not expecting him to say that! But it felt good to be acknowledged like that! I texted my brothers and sisters. One sister said great and the other said something that sounded fake and it wasn't really sincere. It just made me sad. Well I need to blow it off and forget it. None of my siblings really understand the things I do for mom throughout the day. It can be difficult on some days. I need to pull it together and be thankful. It is what it is!

I need to get back to working on my pink baby hat!

If anyone is reading this, thanks for listening.

Tuesday!

Today was a verrrry long day at the nursing home! I was exhausted, should have went to bed before 11pm! I will tonight! I shall be in bed by 9 pm! I really need to be! Mom was very active today! I managed to work on the new hat I am designing, I guess if I work a little everyday on it I will get it done!
I did get my square done! So tired tonight!

Quiet Sunday!

Mom didn't feel good so I had some quality time to crochet today. Here is today's square!

Saturday, January 8, 2011

Snowy Saturday!

It was a quiet cold day at the nursing home, so many people stayed in bed! Mom and I did our usual walking and the hallways were free and clear of wheelchairs and walkers! There was no one to say hello to this morning even this afternoon it was very quiet and still cold. We watched the snow cascading down like a shower of powdered sugar being sifted into a bowl! I wanted to run outside and dance in the shower of whiteness! I never seen snow pour from the sky in buckets of teeny tiny flakes like that! I wish I could have done it but leaving mom alone wasn't an option.

I did manage to squeak in enough time to make my square of the day.

Crazy Friday!

Today went by very fast! I took Jonathan for a med check this morning, I didn't get to the nursing home until 10:00. I wasn't there ten minutes when a volunteer got very ill. He wasn't contagious it was related to his physical ailments. I got his pain pill open and helped him hold his cup he was shaking violently! He was curling up in a fetal position! I offered to drive him home because he was not able to do it! I took mom back to her hall and told them I was leaving but would return!
I live in one city and he lives on the other side of the area in another city! It took 1 hour and 10 minutes to get him home! He was 5 miles from my brother's home! He hurt so bad the moaning was horrific. I could relate to it from suffering with pain from chemo drugs and cancer. Finally the last 15 minutes I could tell his pain med had kicked in! I didn't get back until 1:15! Mom was fine! They take good care of her!

I didn't get my square done until I got home this evening! What a crazy Friday!

Happy Day!

Mom wasn't very sleepy today! Usually I am fighting her to stay awake because she wanders the halls at night! I has asked 2 weeks ago if they could try a sleeping pill for her because she wants to sleep all day and walk all night! The nurse said the doctor prescribed a pill and she started it last night! She slept all night! (clapping hands!) I hope it continues to work! Time will tell!

I was so busy at NH that I did not get to anchor my new chair down again with a much stronger cord. But great news! Mom's folding chair was returned to her closet! I was so surprised to see it! Here is a pic of today's square!

Yarn Protector Folding Chair Stealing Thieves Rope!

I was having a moment of frustration today.

My mother lives in a nursing home. I go 7 days a week, 6 to 8 hours a day to care for her. One of the most frustrating things that happens there is “THEFT”! It is very difficult to maintain mom’s needs when the items you purchase for her are always being stolen or borrowed!

I will keep this simple instead of going off on a tangent tonight. During the holidays my folding chair my spouser purchased for me was lifted from mom’s closet where it is discreetly hidden by her winter coat and other sweaters. It has her name written all over it. It had to be taken by someone who knew I had it there.
I let it be known to the proper nursing home authorities mom’s chair was taken. My frustration was futile. They generously gave me an old broken folding chair to use. I had it for almost 2 weeks when it disappeared 4 days ago. Today a chair that had been sitting in the hallway for a few weeks was noticed by the administrator and she told the nurse to please find someone to remove it from the hallway. I willingly offered to take the chair and place it in mom’s room!

The chair is old and dirty but comfortable! I took one of mom’s small blankets and covered it! My only problem was how to keep the chair from leaving mom’s room? I spied one of the maintenance assistance’s in the hallway and asked him for a piece of rope or chain. He looked at me funny and came back with this pitiful piece of string!

I thanked him and decided I would do the best that I could with this 4 feet of string!

I crocheted it with yarn then crocheted a longer chain on the end of it.

I used it to tie to the chair and tie to my floor lamp. I hope I made it thick enough so that it would require sharp scissors to cut the 2 apart from each other!

I pray the chair is still there in the morning! I will be sad if it is gone. Its the simple things I need the most there and the most difficult to attain. Just to be able to sit by my mom’s bed when I am there for 7 hours or longer is easier to handle if I can sit somewhat comfortably. I'm not always sitting except when she gets very sick.

I will bring reinforcements with me in the morning! I have a thick strong cord and I will tie it to the bed and to the lamp and hold it in place with a metal clamp which I will screw in place! Gee, I hope that works! ;^)

I managed to get mom to walk a lot today. Keeping her active all day is so important. She really wanted to stay in bed all day because she wondered the hallways till 2 in the morning. She had  a 30 minute nap late in the afternoon. I just barely got my square of the day completely. I think I may have crocheted about 45 minutes all day!

I found this leftover green variegated I made a hat from!

Sickness is Everywhere at NH!

I felt so guilty at nursing home today. Several people called out sick! I had been around all of them! Last Friday on New Year's Eve I was exhausted at the NH. I had stayed up late Wednesday and Thursday night so I chalked it up to tiredness. By 4 pm on Friday I had started coughing and feeling very run down. I went home and crashed in the recliner!

Saturday morning the nurse sent me home because I was very sick. Oh gosh I feel so badly for all those people I was around! Most of them are gone! I listened to the cna's talking about the others being very sick! I still don't have my voice back but I do feel better! Mom was slow moving today. I am positive she is going to get it. We share a diet pepsi everyday. She was walking slower than molasses coming out out a bottle!

I managed to get my camouflage hat done for Lawrence.  I finished my square for the day and I started another hat!

I found this Red Heart yarn called Williamsburg Print, I must have made a hat from it I still have a lot left!

No walking today!

Mom must me catching what I have had for the past 4 days. She was very tired this morning so I laid her down for a nap. I had to wake her to eat lunch! I was crocheting very slow. I really wanted to lay down with mom and sleep too! Instead I made my square for the day and started a hat!

I was gone Saturday and Sunday from the nursing home. It's so great to be loved! All my "dirty old men" let me know they missed me! There's just something special about walking through the the NH and hearing, "Hey beautiful", or "I missed you", or "your late!", or "hi good looking!". I love hanging out with all the men and women. They teach me something new every week I am here!

On a crochet note I made my usual square from "Dayna's Crochet" and I changed the color combinations just to see how it would look! It does not look like Dayna's pinwheel square! I'm not sure if I like it! Check this out!

Really looks different!
